World Tsunami Awareness Day

Observed on 5 November, World Tsunami Awareness Day promotes early warning, preparedness, and coordinated action to prevent hazards from becoming disasters.

About World Tsunami Awareness Day (5 November)

Be tsunami ready

World Tsunami Awareness Day is observed on 5 November. Tsunamis can be deadly, but they need not be. Early warning and early action are effective tools to protect people, save lives, and prevent the hazard from becoming a disaster.

Early warning and early action

Effective tsunami early-warning systems must cover every person at risk, be multi-hazard, and be supported by prepared communities that can act quickly. The Day encourages countries, international bodies, and civil society to raise awareness and share innovative approaches to risk reduction.

Background

In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day. Japan proposed the observance, drawing on its experience and expertise in tsunami early warning, public action, and building back better after disasters.
